Intro

The following is a collection of links to useful programs and information.

In the following list "»" indicates software that we highly recommend that you install. Some software is free; some is commerical software that you have to purchase.

Anti-Virus
  • » McAffee VirusScan Online : Anti-virus software. This software can check for known viruses as files are accessed (such as e-mail attachments or webpages), or you can tell it to go and scan every file on your hard drive (you can keep using your computer as it scans).

Internet
  • » McAffee Spam Killer : Goes through your e-mail and removes nearly all the spam. Deleted spam is kept in a "trashcan" so you can undelete it if you have to. Comes with numerous pre-defined "spam filters"; you can change them or define your own such as e-mail addresses to always let in.

  • » Microsoft Windows Defender : Scan for and removes spyware software installed on your computer.

  • » Ad-Aware : Scan for and removes spyware software installed on your computer.

  • SpyBot - Search & Destroy : Blocks access of Internet Explore to websites known to be sources of spyware software. And can scan your computer for known spyware.

  • » Pop-Up Stopper : Prevents most "pop-up" and "pop-under" ads that show up on your web browser when you visit a website. Note: You do not need this plug-in if you are already using another plug-in that also does pop-up blocking, such as Google toolbar or MSN toolbar.

  • » McAfee Personal Firewall : Prevents unauthorized access to your computer. A firewall is essential if you are on the Internet for a few hours per day or your computer is connected to the internet via a cable modem or high speed connection. Note: Windows XP comes with a built-in firewall but it may not block as many threats as McAfee Personal Firewall.

  • HijackThis : A general homepage hijackers detector and remover. Alternative download: HijackThis.exe

  • CWShredder : A small utility for removing CoolWebSearch.

  • LSP-Fix : Repairs a specific type of problem associated with certain Internet software. This type of software is known as a Layered Service Provider or LSP.

  • Port Numbers List: If your firewall reports activity on a certain port number, this list can be helpful to determine if the activity is legitimate or not.

  • PC Hell .com: Useful links and instructions on removing various spyware.

Windows

  • AnswersThatWork.com : Useful information. The "The Task List" can help you identify those unknown programs (such as Loadqm) that show up in your computer's Task List (press Ctrl-Alt-Del once to get it -- WARNING: save/close all documents before you do this!!!). Also, "Drivers", boot disks, useful software, and more!

  • BugToaster.com : Useful information to help you track down the causes of computer crashes. You can see their "Bugs Stats" page without having to install the BugToaster software.
