Intro

Are you planning to set up a network in your business or home? Below you'll find a tutorial and links to useful resources.

DSL Modem

If you want to connect your computer (or computers) to your LAN or to the Internet through a DSL modem, you're going to need networking hardware.

Some typical ways to connect your DSL modem are:

  • Non-shared modem (1 computer only):
    DSL modem <-> computer (Note: use a "crossover cable")

  • Shared modem (up to 3 computers):
    DSL modem <-> 4-port Router <=> up to 3 computers

  • Shared modem (adding to an existing LAN):
    DSL modem <-> 1-port Router <-> hub <=> computers, or
    DSL modem <-> 4-port Router <-> hub <=> computers

With a DSL modem, you can use one phone line for both data and voice at the same time. First, check with your local telephone company to see if they support DSL modems in your area. Once your telephone company connects the DSL service to your telephone line, you plug the DSL modem into the wall jack and insert "filters" (typically supplied by the telephone company) between the wall jacks and your telephones. You can use a standard telephone splitter if you want to plug the DSL modem and a telephone or fax machine (with a filter) into the same wall jack.

            /-- filter -- phone(s) or fax
wall jack -+
            \-- DSL modem

Firewall

If you're connecting your network to the Internet (either through a dial-up connection or a DSL modem), experts strongly recommended that you install "personal firewall" software on your computer. Without it, Internet hackers may be able to break into your computer and steal your data or do even worse. For more information, visit my Firewall page.
